COSHH Awareness

Hazardous substances are present in most, if not all, workplaces. They can cause ill health, irritate the skin or eyes, corrode surfaces, and damage the environment if measures are not taken to control the risk. This short course explains the Control of Hazardous Substances to Health (COSHH) regulation and gives practical advice for preventing, or limiting, exposure to these substances at work.
This course is suitable for professionals in a wide range of industries, supervisors and managers, and those with a responsibility for health and safety at work.
Learning outcomes
- You will understand the basics of COSHH, Workplace Exposure Limits (WELs), and COSHH risk assessments
- You will be able to identify different hazardous substances and their ‘routes of entry’ into the body
- You will understand the importance of taking control measures to protect yourself, and others, from the risk of exposure to hazardous substances
Advantages of this course
- Preventing exposure entirely is the best way to protect workers, but this is not always possible, especially in certain industries. When exposure cannot be prevented, control measures need to be taken to limit exposure to hazardous substances. A presentation on ‘Hazardous substances and control measures’ is included in the Presentation section of this course.
- Every workplace needs to conduct a COSHH assessment as part of their health and safety responsibilities to keep workers, and visitors to the site, safe from harm. This short course includes information on the COSHH assessment and a template can be found in the Reading section.
- Websites and video resources are utilised to further explain working with substances hazardous to health
- There is also suggested extra reading that gives both practical information and links to websites to expand knowledge
