Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) Awareness

FGM is illegal in this country and considered child abuse, but it is estimated that around 60,000 girls under 15 years are at risk when they travel to visit relatives in countries where this harmful practice is common. Anyone who works with children, young people, and vulnerable adults has statutory safeguarding duties in regards to FGM. This course explains the FGM procedures, reasons why it is practiced in other countries, the significant health consequences, and how best to support children and young people who you suspect may be at risk.
Learning outcomes
- Understand what FGM is and the groups that are most likely to be affected by it
- Know the harmful effects of FGM and why it is considered abuse
- Spot the signs and symptoms of FGM
- Understand how FGM fits into statutory safeguarding duties, and the importance of raising awareness at educational settings
- Know the legislation and guidance related to FGM in the UK
Advantages of this course
- Anyone who works with children, young people, and vulnerable adults has safeguarding responsibilities and must act when there are concerns. Talking about FGM as part of safeguarding and child abuse, can help with lifting the ‘taboo’ which clouds this subject. When people feel able to talk openly about FGM, occasions may rise where girls find the confidence to question and disclose any concerns they may have in regard to FGM themselves, or for a sibling, family member, friend, or colleague.
- FGM is rarely spoken about openly and when it is, there can be mis-information and myths circulated as facts in social groups. It is important to share the message that FGM has no health benefits, and the physical and mental health effects following FGM are considerable.
- Websites and video resources are utilised to explain FGM
- Additional activities encourage you to reflect on the learning and apply it to your practice
- There is also suggested extra reading that gives both practical information and links to websites to expand knowledge
