Allergy Awareness in Schools

Allergy awareness is an essential part of keeping pupils safe at school. Every member of staff has a role to play in recognising allergy risks, preventing accidental exposure to allergens, and responding quickly and appropriately in an emergency. You will learn about common allergens, the signs and symptoms of allergic reactions and anaphylaxis, and the importance of individual healthcare plans and effective communication. The course also explores practical steps to reduce the risk of allergen exposure during lessons, lunchtime, school trips, and other school activities, as well as the actions to take if a child experiences a severe allergic reaction. By the end of the course, you will have a greater understanding of how to help create a safer, more inclusive environment for children with allergies and the confidence to support your school's allergy management procedures.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

Recognise the different types of allergies, common allergens, and the signs and symptoms of mild and severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis
Understand the roles and responsibilities of school staff in preventing allergen exposure and supporting children with allergies in line with school policies and individual healthcare plans
Respond appropriately to an allergic reaction by following emergency procedures, including the safe use of adrenaline auto-injectors where appropriate and seeking emergency medical assistance
